Zayn Malik received criticism on social media after he asked fans to contribute to a fund-raising campaign for his mother’s terminally ill best friend.

The former One Direction member posted a link to Ayesha Butt’s GoFundMe page on Twitter and was met with mixed responses from his 21.8 million followers.

Butt, who has terminal lung cancer, is seeking £120,000 to pay for a medical treatment in Istanbul.

Many of Malik’s fans wondered why he did not contribute to the campaign when he is estimated to have a £30million fortune.

“You’re the one with millions. You help!” a fan wrote.

Butt later came to Malik’s defense, stating that she would never “ask him for financial help in any way.”

“I asked my 'nephew' Zayn Malik to drum up some publicity for me, by way of highlighting my page and illness via Twitter. This had an adverse effect on him as the spiteful trolls were attacking him for his kindness. Never, ever would I ask him for financial help in any way, and I wouldn't want it any other way,” she said.
